Modular Helmets
My preference in motorcycle helmets is the modular helmet, as it provides full face protection, yet you can easily flip up the front to put your sunglasses on or speak to your riding companion. Look for flip-up helmets that can be opened with one hand, since you'll probably need at least one hand for the clutch or front brake.
Full Face Helmets
Many riders prefer the full face helmet, primarily for the extra level of safety that it provides. Full face helmets also have the lowest level of wind noise. When selected a full face helmet, look for a quick-snap system on the chin strap.
Half Face Helmets
Half helmets are great for really experiencing the ride, as they allow your face to be open to the wind. When I took my first road trip in 1974 on a 1968 R/60, I used a half helmet and I got a terrific tan on my face. The problem was that I also got lots of bugs, rocks, bees, and dirt on my face. So if you don't mind any of that, consider getting a half helmet. Having said that, I carry a half helmet with my in my duffle bag, in case I want to carry a passenger on not break any helmet laws.
Racing Helmets
Similar to a full face helmet is the racing helmet. These helmets typically are painted with graphics and bright colors and have extra padding in the cheeks and around the neck. If you want the highest level of protection and don't mind the flashy look, consider getting a racing helmet.
